The young Buffalo Bills wide receiver, Sammy Watkins, is one of the most exciting players in the NFL. He played in college for Clemson University and was drafted 4th in the 2014 draft. He has all the skills necessary to be one of the top players the league has ever seen.
New Era recognized the immense talent Watkins possessed, making him a partner was obviously an easy choice for the company. I spoke to Sammy Watkins about his love for his sport, his relationship with New Era and his personal style off the field.
When it comes to football—what do you consider to be your greatest achievement?
Being able to stick with football for so long and being able to live my dream of playing in the NFL. Playing with elite players in the NFL and college has been a great achievement for me. It is definitely something I look forward to continuing to do for a long time.
If you weren’t a football player what do you think you would be doing?
I would probably be teaching in school or coaching football. Being a physical education teacher would be great because I love working with kids. Being able to teach kids the significance of being physically active is important.
Can you talk a little bit about how your relationship with New Era started?
It started when I first came to the NFL. I didn’t know much about companies and endorsements but my agent helped me with learning about this area of the game. It’s been great being able to go to events and meet all different kinds of people. I’m just having a lot of fun and being able to share my creativity with the people who love New Era is great.
What are some of the most important aspects for you personally when it comes to creating a partnership with a brand like New Era?
It’s really about relationships and treating everyone with respect. Wearing the merchandise and promoting it on social media is something that I like to do. I really enjoy promoting the brand.
How many New Era caps do you have in your personal collection?
Between my dad, brother and me—about 60 or 70. We are starting to become collectors—especially since my line of New Era caps just came out.
How would you describe your personal style off the field?
I am more of a laid back guy. I like to wear a nice shirt, jacket, jeans and a pair of shoes that hook up well with my cap. The offseason is when I get kind of spiffy—but usually I’m just wearing a nice pair of Adidas shoes. I like my Yeezys because they go great with a couple of my New Era caps.
