J.J. Abrams seems to have no problem finding projects to work on. His latest project, The Force Awakens, is breaking every box office record in sight. And it looks like we won’t have to wait very long for the next J.J. project—the long awaited sequel to his hit film, Cloverfield, opens on March 11th. Now, the shocker isn’t that the 2008 monster movie is going to have a follow-up—the shocker is we only learned about this sequel when trailers for the film showed up in theaters today. 10 Cloverfield Lane stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Goodman. The “sequel” is directed by Dan Trachtenberg.
JJ is known for his secrecy and “mystery box” approach to filmmaking. But, hiding story and plot points from the audience with projects like The Force Awakens and Star Trek Into Darkness is a whole lot different than hiding an entire movie from them. Abrams released a statement regarding the Cloverfield project.
“The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”
This statement from JJ brings up as many questions as it does answers—which is sooo JJ! Hopefully all of our questions will be answered when 10 Cloverfield Lane opens this March.
