Even though we are only a few days into 2016 we can easily say that 2015 was a great year for rapper Pusha T. Besides delivering new music off his latest project, “Darkest Before Dawn: The Prelude,” Pusha T also gifted his fans with a short film directed by Kid Art. And if that was not enough, Pusha T officially announced just a few weeks before the New Year, that he is the official President of G.O.O.D. music. To start off 2016 on a truly fashionable note we wanted to pay homage to the Virginia MC and highlight some of Pusha T’s best style traits with this episode of stndrd style.
Pusha T’s career started to really surface at an interesting time in terms of street-wear and the internet. The internet in the early 2000’s made street-wear and hip-hop more visible and more connected than ever. For the first time fans were able to get insight and get familiar with brands from their favorite music artists outside of music videos, thanks to the early blogs, forums and chat rooms. Pusha T being one of the early pioneers when it came to wearing BAPE and BBC has always been draped and influenced by streetwear since he came on the music scene. In fact, his love for fashion ultimately led him to start his own clothing label, “Play Cloths,” with his brother Malice in 2008. He also opened an upscale boutique in Norfolk, VA called “Crème.” From wearing throwback jerseys to his “I’m Your Pusha” tees on stage we watched Pusha T’s style transform and grow while keeping the street-wear influence connected to his style.
Pusha T has consistently sported braids throughout his career—I am pretty sure that it is the only way we can tell him apart from his brother, Malice. In hip-hop, every influential artist has something that ultimately becomes synonymous with their name and career. For instance, when we mention Jay-z we think of the Yankee Baseball Cap. Slick Rick, we think of the endless gold chains. For Pusha T it’s always the braids. His hair has become a part of his legacy. Even though a lot of artists abandoned the braids for a low cut or temper fade—fashion-forward celebrities like Pusha T, Asap Rocky and Travis Scott continue to carry the braids torch for the next generation.
Adidas has been THE lifestyle brand in 2015—thanks to the success of music artists like Kanye West, Big Sean and Pharrell Williams. Last year Pusha T teamed up with Adidas for a Black Friday release called, “The Black Market.” “Black Market” had the blogs and stores in a frenzy on the release day. The model was the Adidas EQT Running Guidance ’93 and it came dipped in an all-black color-way with fish scale detail on the heel and cracked Italian leather on the upper. It also fittingly had “KING PUSH” engraved lace tags. With two successful sneaker releases under his belt—in 2016 can we expect a three-peat from Pusha T and Adidas? Judging by the success of his last two releases I believe Pusha T has earned his stripes for another release this year.
Coming from Virginia where “Aint’ s** to do but cook”, Pusha T has proven that he has more to offer than just that as he continues to expand his influence in both music and fashion. We are sure to see, and hear, plenty of Pusha T in 2016. And we are sure that he will be dressed for the occasion!
