Skateboard star Aaron Herrington is originally from Oregon. Herrington is considered one of the most exciting young skaters in the game today. That exhilaration he generates on a board has allowed him to become one of Converse’s most valued riders.

“I’ve been a fan of Converse since my first pair of Chuck Taylors in grade school. When I got older and was skateboarding more often—I was a little tired of the skateboard shoes that were on the market. I was searching for something different. Around that same time Converse was starting a skateboard program—so it made sense for me to want to try something different but with a classic look and feel,” says Aaron Herrington.

We talked to Aaron Herrington about his love of skating and the respect his craft receives from the general public.

How would you describe your personal style of skating?

Street skateboarder.

If you could pick one place in the world to skate, where would it be?

New York City.

Is a skateboard the place you feel most comfortable?

Definitely. I feel more comfortable riding a skateboard than walking most the time.

Do you remember when you fell in love with skateboarding?

My brother got a skateboard for his birthday one year and didn’t really use it. It sat in our garage for months before I picked it up and started messing around with it. I remember going to this local skate shop with my mom when I was about 9 or 10 years old. I have been in love with it ever since.

Do you think skateboarders get the respect they deserve from the public in regards to being true athletes?

Yes and no. I think a lot of people see skateboarding on television and really respect skateboarders as athletes. But then some of those same people see people skateboarding in the streets and think it’s a nuisance. In New York City a lot of people think skateboarding is really cool but they would still prefer to see it in a skate park or controlled environment instead of in the street or on the sidewalk.
