Stacey Dash: 20 Years of “Clueless”

On July 19th, 1995 one of the most iconic films ever opened in theaters, Clueless! The classic spawned an endless amount of memorable quotes, had a strong influence on fashion and helped to jump-start a lot of successful acting careers. The teenage comedy starred Alicia Silverstone (Cher), Brittany Murphy (Tai) and Paul Rudd (Josh). It was written and directed by Amy Heckerling.

Stacey Dash was also a part of the film’s talented young cast. She played Cher’s best friend, Dionne. We had the chance to speak with Stacey Dash about her thoughts and memories regarding the classic film.

Do people still call you Dionne when you are out somewhere? Do people always try and share with you their favorite quotes or scenes from the film?

Yes! I love it. I enjoy it every time and feel honored.

I can remember watching Clueless in a movie theater and I can’t believe the film is 20 years old. Are you as amazed as I am that the film is celebrating its 20th anniversary?

No, I can’t believe it either. But I still love the movie. I still love the people I worked with in the movie. I am honored that it is considered iconic. It seems to be having new life breathed into it by Iggy Azalea and others.

Did the film feel special when you were making it?

I think all of us involved knew it was going to be special.

How did you land the role of Dionne?

I auditioned for it. I had to fight for it.

How did you view Dionne? It would be easy to view her as superficial and unlikeable. How did you view her as a character? Did you like her as a character?

I loved her as a character. She wasn’t mean. She had a lot of compassion. She was just very opinionated and stood strong in her beliefs. There was no pushing Dionne around.

The relationship between you and Alicia Silverstone felt very real and authentic in Clueless. Did you guys grow to be friends during the shoot?

Yes, during the shoot we did grow to be friends. We had huge respect for each other and we had so much fun together. We had great chemistry.

We tragically lost Brittany Murphy in 2009. What was it like working with her on the film?

It was wonderful. She was one of the kindest people I’ve ever met in my life. She had a heart of gold and a contagious laugh.

There are so many famous and memorable quotes in Clueless. Do you have a personal favorite?

“There goes your social life.”

It feels like they don’t really make teenage comedies like they used to. Do you feel like the genre has been missing in the last 10 years or so? If you do, why do you think that is?

Absolutely, the genre is definitely missing. Because we no longer have a moral compass.

You reprised the role of Dionne in the Clueless TV show. What was that experience like?

It was different because Amy was not there everyday and Clueless was her baby. It was her vision and no one could translate it better than her.

Has anyone ever discussed with you the possibility of doing a sequel?

Everyone always suggests that we do a sequel but until Amy decides that she wants to do a sequel—there will be no sequel.

If they asked you to come up with an idea for a Clueless sequel—what would you like to see Cher and Dionne doing in it?

Being mothers and businesswomen. I think that would be funny.

What is your favorite memory regarding the making of Clueless

I don’t have just one. I can truly say that every single day was memorable. Being surrounded by so much talent and having a captain at the helm that was so strong and clear. That was a joy.

Why do you think the film has been able to remain so relevant and beloved for 20 years now?

Because it has value. It can stand the test of time. That’s how good it is.
