We spoke to Yvonne Kai about her inspirations, the kind of customer she is hoping to reach and how sneaker culture has influenced much of her work.

Where are you from originally?

I was born in Hong Kong and grew up in Toronto.

Can you talk a little bit about your professional background?

My education is in Comparative Culture Studies, Graphic Design and Beauty Industry Marketing. I have a background in marketing…specifically social media and special events. I started my blog, heydoyou.com, about fashion and beauty 8 years ago. I have worked for beauty and fashion companies in the past both in North America and abroad.

What inspired you to start Come Clean?

I wanted to create a beauty product that could be used by everyone and I found glycerin soap to be so interesting. I wanted to learn all about soap making using natural ingredients and with my very own pop culture spin on it!

Can you describe the products your company offers?

We make hand poured natural, vegan, kosher and glycerin soaps. The designs are influenced by pop culture, New York City and the stories that shape our lives.

What kind of consumer are you looking to reach with the Come Clean products?

We are looking for people who want to add some whimsy to their everyday routine—people who want more than a humble and mundane soap.

You make a lot of sneaker inspired products—are you a sneaker fan?

Yes! The Sneaker Soap was the very first idea I had when I first started Come Clean. The sneakers we chose are very particular. They are all style icons that have impacted pop culture in one way or another.
