Yesterday Marvel Studios offered fans the chance to see 17 minutes of Guardians of the Galaxy almost a month before its release date! The preview was presented in IMAX 3D and was absolutely free! The film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and was directed by James Gunn.

I was lucky enough to attend the preview and I can honestly say the footage they showed is visually stunning. Chris Pratt definitely seems capable of delivering a leading man caliber performance. His work in the picture feels inspired by the Harrison Ford rogue characters of the 80s (that of course is a great thing). The real star of the 17-minute preview was Rocket Raccoon in my mind. You get the feeling that every kid is going to want a stuffed Rocket at Christmas time. The tone, energy and look of the entire project really impressed me.

The 2014 summer film season has been pretty disappointing so far. Marvel may be a little worried about the box office potential of Guardians. The film is definitely a lot more fantastical than the more grounded in reality superhero flicks Marvel has been releasing lately. This free preview was obviously designed to heighten interest and awareness in the project. I think this tactic by Marvel Studios worked masterfully. I was already really looking forward to Guardians of the Galaxy before the preview and now I am even more excited. It’s August 1st release date can’t come soon enough and the Guardians might just be able to save the summer!
