Shopping List: Cool Socks Bruh

“Cool Socks Bruh” has made a name for itself on social media by promoting their unique items that utilize pop culture imagery. They manufacture mugs, socks and other items that feature music artists, movie characters and other cultural mainstays. We spoke to Tim Nicholson (who handles much of the artwork for “Cool Socks”) about being a small company in today’s business landscape, his personal favorites and the future of “Cool Socks Bruh.”

What made you guys start the company?

We are a collective group of friends that are always thinking of things we would like to see. The socks were just one idea that took off. We are surrounded by lot of inspirational friends, so we would give them some of the ones we had already made, and they would show them off on social media. Next thing you know… people were trying to purchase them.

What kinds of things inspire you, and the work you do for the company?

Music. Friends. Living in the city of Chicago, which is not like any other city in the world. You have to deal with the elements a lot more in Chicago. Half of the year you are extra productive because you are stuck inside due to winter.

What is the biggest challenge that faces a small company like Cool Socks Bruh?

I would say supplying the demand. We were using Nike socks at first because of the quality, but that ended up being too expensive and too stressful to maintain. We reached out to manufacturers and now have our own sock. It took a lot of time and patience to obtain the right quality of sock to move forward with. It also makes the socks more affordable for our customers. We were selling socks at $60 in the beginning and not everyone can afford that.

What is your favorite item that you guys have produced?

I would have to say the Cheetos’ socks. In the beginning, I was saying that I wouldn’t wear them. They eventually won me over because of how the iconic imagery popped off the socks.

In what ways does social media help your company?

It’s how we started marketing and it really helped us flourish within the social media community. We are very thankful for our supporters and followers. We try to make things entertaining and also give them exclusive deals on social media.

What kind of goals do you guys have long term for your company?

Now that we have our own high quality socks, we are looking forward to growing as a brand. We are moving forward with customization, as well as collabs with teams, artists and who ever else feels right for us. As a team, we try to pay attention to things that are going on in music, fashion, lifestyle, etc. We are always looking forward to doing collabs with people who inspire us!
