Jeff Staple

Jeff Staple is the founder and head of Staple Design. It was founded in New York City in 1997. Staple Design is known for their clothing line, creative agency, as well as their retail store.  The Staple clothing line is a streetwear brand that is best recognized for mixing the streetwear aesthetic with a high-end fashion look and feel. Their creative agency serves as a consulting firm. They have provided consultation to some of the top companies around, including Nike, Sony, New Balance, just to name a few. Staple Design also owns and operates Reed Space in the Lower East Side of New York City. Reed Space is one of the world’s most innovative stores.

Staple Design started out quite humbly. While in college, Jeff Staple worked as an entry–level data clerk at a design firm. He quickly made his way up the corporate ladder at the firm with his dedication and passion. His unexpected and rapid growth prompted him to drop out of NYU. He was studying journalism at the time but the graphic design bug got the best of him. It started to feel like graphic design was the best outlet for his creativity.  This came as a huge surprise to him as he never showed any previous interest in the field. He didn’t have the knowledge, or skill set, that would give him the opportunity to pursue a job in design seriously.  He had some big decisions to make if this life-changing shift was a possibility.

Staple then rearranged his life to follow a career in graphic design. He enrolled in a design school and started taking various internships and positions in companies that could help give him the experience and knowledge he would need to compete in a very competitive field. Jeff then started making his own graphically designed T-shirts. The designs proved to be popular and based on the success of those shirts he was able to branch out into bigger more extravagant areas of design.

Jeff Staple followed his heart and it paid off big for him. Staple Design is currently one of the most respected and artistic companies in the industry currently.

Why did you choose your current career?

I really feel like I didn’t choose my career. It sort of happened by accident. It wasn’t a career choice.  It was a string of happy coincidences.

What’s the best business advice you were ever given?

Bill Cosby has a quote and it’s, “I don’t know the secret to success, but I do know the secret to failure, and it’s trying to please everyone.”

If you had to start all over again, would you do anything differently?

Generally speaking, no. But if I could go back in time, I might have tried to find a partner early on, who was a business or financial expert to guide us along the way, so I didn’t have to learn everything on my own.

Do you feel like a success story?

Yes, I do. I wake up every day and I love what I do. That’s a success.
